Every euro saved on energy is a euro available for something else.
Fabric, heating, controls, ventilation, lighting and solar.
Schools are among the most challenging buildings to heat well. Large volumes, high occupancy during the day, extended empty periods, wide variation in room use, and heating systems that frequently date to a different era of energy prices.
ENCON delivers energy upgrades across the education sector — primary and secondary schools, colleges, training centres and university buildings. Work spans fabric upgrades, heating and controls, ventilation, lighting and solar PV.
Every euro saved on energy in a school is a euro available for something else, and that argument lands with boards of management in a way it doesn’t always elsewhere. The classroom environment argument matters at least as much: cold rooms, stuffy rooms and poor air quality all affect how well children learn.
Decades of extensions, each to the standard of its day.
What we commonly find in school buildings:
Solar is a particularly good fit for schools: consumption is concentrated in daylight hours during term, and the roof area is usually generous.
From insulation to heat pumps, ventilation and more. Improve comfort, lower bills and increase your BER rating.
New builds, extensions and deep retrofits, fully managed from design and planning through to construction and completion.
High-quality solar panel systems for homes, farms and businesses. Lower energy costs and gain energy independence.
Energy upgrades and construction solutions for commercial, agricultural and public sector projects.
School works happen in the summer. That’s a hard constraint, it’s the same eight weeks everybody else is bidding for, and it means programming and procurement have to start well before the holidays.
We plan school projects around it: survey during term, specify and procure in spring, deliver over the summer break, commission before September. Where a project can’t fit one summer, it’s phased across two rather than dragged into term time.
Where works do need to happen during term, child protection requirements, Garda vetting, site segregation and access control are non-negotiable and planned from the outset rather than discussed on day one.
Education buildings can access community energy projects and non-domestic schemes, alongside Department of Education funding streams. We’ll help identify which routes are realistic and support the applications.
Some can, with proper segregation and vetting. Major fabric and heating works are far better suited to the summer break.
Usually heating controls and zoning first, then lighting, then fabric. Solar is strong where roof area and daytime demand line up.
Frequently, yes. A full classroom raises CO2 quickly, and in many schools the only control is opening a window. It’s worth assessing properly.
A mix, depending on the school: community energy projects, non-domestic schemes and Department funding. We’ll help work out which apply.
Yes, and grouping buildings into one project usually improves both the funding position and the pricing.
