Non-Domestic Microgen Grant

Turn an idle roof into generation your business actually uses.

What the Microgen Grant Supports

Solar PV on business, farm, community and public sector buildings.

The Non-Domestic Microgeneration Grant supports solar PV installations on business, farm, community and public sector buildings. It exists to make on-site generation viable for organisations whose roofs are sitting idle while they buy every unit they use.

The economics are straightforward. Most non-domestic buildings consume the bulk of their electricity during daylight hours — which is exactly when a rooftop array generates. Every unit you generate and use on site is a unit you don’t buy, at retail price, including standing charges and levies.

Grant levels are tiered by system size and are set by SEAI, with revisions from time to time. We confirm the current position for your building and proposed array size as part of the feasibility work, rather than quoting a number that may have changed.

Where It Stacks Up Best

The more you use as you generate, the better the return.

A microgen grant makes most sense where:

  • Daytime consumption is high — the more you use as you generate, the better the return
  • Roof area is available and structurally sound, with reasonable orientation and minimal shading
  • The building operates year-round rather than seasonally
  • Refrigeration, machinery, milking or processing loads run through the day

Excess generation can be exported and paid for under the Clean Export Guarantee, but export rates are well below what you pay for import — so a system sized to your own consumption pattern beats a system sized to fill the roof.

Sizing and Grid Connection

Two things decide whether a commercial array performs: sizing against your actual load profile, and getting the grid connection right.

Load profile. We work from your half-hourly consumption data where it’s available, not from annual totals. A site with heavy daytime load justifies a bigger array than a site with the same annual usage concentrated in the evening.

Grid connection. Non-domestic installations above certain thresholds need a connection application to ESB Networks, and that process has its own timeline. We handle the paperwork and set expectations honestly about how long it takes.

What we deliver

Feasibility, load analysis, system design, structural check, grant application, grid application, installation and commissioning. One contractor from survey to sign-off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible?

Businesses, farms, community organisations, sports clubs and public sector bodies with a non-domestic electricity connection. Specific conditions apply and we’ll confirm them for your organisation.

How much is the grant?

It’s tiered by system size and set by SEAI, with periodic revisions. We confirm the current figure during feasibility rather than quoting one that dates.

Do I get paid for electricity I export?

Yes, under the Clean Export Guarantee — but at a rate well below what you pay to import. Sizing to your own consumption is where the value is.

Will my roof take it?

Most will, but it needs checking. Structural assessment is part of our feasibility work, and roof-mounted alternatives exist where it isn’t suitable.

How long does the grid connection take?

Longer than the installation. We’ll give you a realistic timeline up front.

Why ENCON
