Windows & Doors

The weakest part of the wall, and the first thing people notice.

What Makes a Window Energy Efficient

Four things, and the glass is only one of them.

Even a good modern window loses heat several times faster than the insulated wall around it. Older single-glazed units, or early double glazing with failed seals and aluminium spacers, lose it far faster again — and bring draughts, condensation and street noise with them.

Four things make a window energy efficient, and the glass is only one of them:

  • The glazing — double or triple, with low-emissivity coatings and an inert gas fill that slows heat transfer across the cavity
  • The spacer bar — older aluminium spacers conduct heat straight around the glazing, which is why condensation forms at the edges of the pane first. Warm-edge spacers largely eliminate that
  • The frame — frame material and internal chamber design determine how much heat bypasses the glass entirely
  • The installation — the gap between frame and structural opening is a direct path from inside to outside. Insulated and sealed properly it’s a non-issue; filled with foam and covered with a trim, it leaks

When to Replace, and When Not To

If your money does more in the walls first, we'll tell you.

Replacement isn’t always the answer. If your windows are reasonably modern double glazing in sound frames, your money will usually do more in the walls or the attic first. We’ll say so.

Replacement makes clear sense where the glazing is single or the units have failed and are misting internally; where frames are rotten, warped or no longer closing against their seals; where you’re doing wall insulation anyway; where you’re targeting a deep retrofit standard or heat pump readiness; or where noise is the problem as much as heat.

That third point catches people out. Insulating walls without addressing windows leaves the frames sitting in a cold pocket, which creates a thermal bridge and a condensation risk exactly where you can see it.

Sequence the Work Properly

Windows, wall insulation and airtightness all meet at the same junction. If they’re specified together, that junction gets designed once and detailed properly. If they’re done by different contractors in different years, it gets compromised three times. This is one of the strongest arguments for a single-contractor retrofit, and it’s how we plan projects.

Doors

Front and back doors are a small area doing a lot of damage. An insulated core, a good multi-point seal and a well-fitted threshold make a noticeable difference to the hall and the rooms off it. We supply insulated composite and PVC doors, patio and sliding doors, and French doors, in finishes to match the windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is triple glazing worth it in Ireland?

It depends on the rest of the building. In a well-insulated, airtight home targeting a deep retrofit standard, yes. In an otherwise leaky house, the money does more elsewhere first.

Will new windows stop my condensation?

Condensation on the glass, usually yes. Condensation elsewhere in the room may mean a ventilation issue, which needs addressing separately.

Are windows and doors grant supported?

They’re generally included within deep retrofit and One Stop Shop routes rather than as standalone grants. We’ll confirm what applies to your project.

How long does an installation take?

Most homes are done in one to three days, room by room, with each opening closed up the same day.
